Finally the site work begins. The pools are dug and concrete poured, but typically the heavens opened and the pools were filled. Not great for swimming yet though!
Two weeks later we got the slab down. Working until 10pm at night the boys struggled with mud, cold and lack of light. The neighbours must have had a kittens listening to that going half the night. But what can you do … you can’t stop the pouring of concrete once it has started.
Once down you can see the actual footprint of the duplex property, but even this doesn’t prepare you for the size and magnificence of what is to come.
This 1950s family home was built by the late Len Barker, a father and family-man … but not a builder. What an achievement! The house was a testament to his skill and determination to provide a happy environment for his three children to grow up in, in The Shire. The garden was full of his prized orchids and native trees and plants, which encouraged the local flora and fauna to thrive.
The house originally had three bedrooms and one bathroom, but in time a large extension was added to the southern side which created a large living space as well as adding an en suite bathroom.
In 2010 Jo and Bob moved in and added their touches, ripping up the shag pile carpet, painting the walls and updating the kitchen and bathroom. Little Amy was born there in 2008 and again it was a happy home filled with kids and pets – three cats and two rabbits!
Now, more than ten years on, the times have changed and sadly this old home makes way for it’s grand replacement.
I think Len would be proud of the property it has become. I’m not so sure about Iris. I don’t think she would have liked the change, but the new property is built with love and care and need, and that, I hope, she would have understood.
Thank you old house for make our time there memorable, and allowing us to develop a future and new memories for the next generation of Barkers.
